What's with all the ads?
Right now this is my only job while I'm in occupational therapy for an arm injury, so I scrambled to monetize the site as much as possible. It looks like I'll soon be removing all but the large banner ad at the top, the skyscraper down the left side, and the medium rectangle in the text portion, since those three ads earn 99.99% of the site's revenue.
I'll probably continue to have a couple of smaller rotating affiliate links just to support some of the people and companies who have really supported us.
Also, I'll be looking for a way to offer an optional subscription option to allow subscribers to browse the site ad-free. Of course, the comic will always be free for anyone who doesn't mind the ads.
Does Shan do commission art?
Right now Shan is only doing commissions on a case-by-case basis. Between her new day job, physical therapy for a back injury, drawing BCK, and trying to gear up for another project, she is simply swamped. It can't hurt to email her and ask, but to be honest, on the rare occasions she can find time to work on commissions, her rates are pretty high.
What are your artistic backgrounds?
Shan has five years of fine art and graphic design school under her belt from Temple University, and can work in a variety of styles and mediums. Rob has done "writing for hire" for the local paper and for a small RPG company in the midwest.
Do you guys do conventions?
We love conventions. Conventions are how we met. Unfortunately our finances suck right now, otherwise we'd be renting booth space at every convention we could! For now if a convention wants to pay our way, pay our stay, and let us sell stuff, we'll be more than happy to come. That is the only way we can afford it right now.
Do you guys have any other projects in the works?
Yes. Specifically as we get more time, expect to see over the next year or so a manga-drawn sci-fi dramedy called Double-o Sam based around a character Shan invented, a gothic sci-fi super-anti-hero... thing called 01Project: Syberfang that Rob has had in his head for years, a photo comic Rob dreamt up featuring home appliances, vegetables, and action figures, and something called the Cemetary Dance--low-level paranormals trying to live as best they can in a mostly normal world. BCK will continue to be a going concern, and Shan will keep accepting commissions, but as we start making enough to do this full time we'll be able to produce more stuff for you.
Are the characters supposed to be you guys?
No. Most emphatically no. They are based on us to an extent, but many things about them are different. For instance, Cat is not a UNIX whiz like Crash is, Shan is not as outgoing or ditzy as Kit, and Rob actually has gainful emplotment from time to time, unlike Blue. Also, none of us are superheroes. Some other characters may be loosely based on people we know, as well, but only with permission.
How did Blue Crash Kit get started?
This ties into the previous question. Shan and Rob had both been interested for some time in doing comics of some sort, but Rob isn't the greatest artist and Shan had little confidence in her writing abilities. Shan, on a lark, started drawing us as the animals we most closely identified with, and we started talking about how much fun it would be to do a webcomic together using those drawings as character templates. After some discussion we decided to make them superheroes.
Are there any humans in the world of Blue Crash Kit?
No. Blue Crash Kit is set in a reality (or surreality, if you will) in which humans never evolved.
What about "normal" animals?
They're around. Blue, Crash, and Kit even have a normal pet cat. There are two types of most animals--the sapient hominids and the beasts.
Is there any Blue Crash Kit yiff?
No. If fans want to draw yiff or other fan art, of course we're flattered, but this is a PG 13 strip, so there will be no official Blue Crash Kit yiff. Period.
Why is Blue's earring worn on the right ear?
Blue has both ears pierced, but often loses earrings. Although straight, he hates gay bashers, many of whom think that any male with an earring in the right ear only is gay. By wearing the jewelry in his right ear, Blue hopes to incite said gaybashers into attacking him so he can kick their asses and plead self-defense.
Are you guys furries?
Hm. Dunno. The girls (especially Shan) love their home-made ears and tails, and Rob thinks they look awfully cute in them. We produce a furry webcomic. We also identify fairly strongly with certain animals and have been known to growl, mew, purr, yip, etcetera. Does that make us furries/furres? *shrugs* Ya got me. We also make robot noises and random sound effects.
